NYC Grassroots Partner Honored

A committee of New York City civic leaders and professionals convened by the Rockefeller Foundation has selected Alexie Torres-Fleming, the founder of Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ), as the 2008 recipient of the Jane Jacobs Medal for New Ideas and Activism. An HSF grassroots partner since 2000, YMPJ has not only provided a consistent, safe and nurturing space for youth to develop as leaders, but won millions of dollars for environmental justice projects which benefit South Bronx residents. The award includes a $100,000 prize which will be presented at a ceremony in September. The New York Sun provides additional coverage, “A Medal for the Jane Jacobs of the South Bronx.
